"ARARAT-73". (Part 3,02.05.1973)

’Ararat’’defeats the leader

In the 5th tour of the championship ‘’Ararat’’ on home ground met with the leader of the championship. With the leadership of Valeri Lobanovski ‘’Dnepr’’ had started the championship in excellent way (7 points in 4 matches) and together with ‘’Shakhtar’’ were joined leaders of the championship table. From first minute it was already obvious that the Ukrainian side were going to play mainly in defence. They immediately took control over ‘’Ararat’’ players. It must be mentioned
that that the visitors were defending skilfully, assisting each other in time and due to that they kept untouched they net till the break. Starting the match in active way in the beginning ‘’Ararat’’ took four corner kicks. In the 5th minute ‘’Ararat’’ had a real chance to open the score when in a swift way Pogosyan faced the goalkeeper, but at the last moment Koltun with a courageous jump catched the ball under Pogosyan’s legs. In the 20th minute Zanazanyan was a little unlucky, as his long-range strike was slithtly high. Having both territorial and game advantage, however, ‘’Ararat’’ didn’t manage to open the score in the first half.
After the break Nikita Simonyan substituted Mesropyan with Ishtoyan deeply activating attack line. ‘’Ararat’’ players gave high pace to the game organizing attacks mostly in wide front also involving the defenders in their actions. ‘’Dnepr’’ was in full defence. However, as they usually say, the moment of the goal was approaching and it didn’t let spectators wait it too long. It was 65th minute of the game and Eduard Margarov was going to enter the pitch to strengthen the attack line of the hosts, when once again with his master game the topscorer of the championship Arkadi Andriasyan delighted everybody opening the score. Thanks to quick combination and well worked out pass from Pogosyan, Andreasyan won the battle with two tall defenders of the opposite team and headed the ball to the right side of the net.. Koltun had no chance to save the situation. That beautiful header was the ornament of the match, which gave ‘’Ararat’’ a well-deserved victory over the leader who suffered his first defeat in the championship. The victory over the leader was marked in a festive atmosphere, as that day was another jubilee. Aleksander Kovalenko had wore ‘’Ararat’s’’ shirt for the record 250th time in the USSR top division. Going deeper into statistics it must be said that ‘’Ararat’’ was obviously stronger than his opponent.. The hosts took seven corner kicks while ‘’Dnepr’’ had not such a chance at all. ‘’Ararat’’ made nine shoots on target, while their rival disturbed Abrahamyan only once. So ‘’Ararat’s’’ victory over ‘’Dnepr’’ was quite natural. At that particular game Nikita Simonyan showed his brilliant abilities to change team’s game in the second half in a positive way.

Simonyan’s preoccupation was not in vain

Four days later ‘’Ararat’’ on home ground faced ‘’Karpats’’ Lvov. The visitors had a poor start being last but one. During the press-conference the day before the match Nikita Simonyan expressed his preoccupation that his alumni might underestimate the opponent hoping to get an easy victory. As it turned out later, Simonyan’s preoccupation was not in vain. During first 15 minutes creating number of perfect chances, however ‘’Ararat’’ failed to open the score, which surely disappointed the host team. In this situation the visitors themselves took decisive actions. Worth to mention Shpodarunok’s and Brovarski’s skilful play who could punish ‘’Ararat’’ if not the brilliant play of Alyosha Abrahamyan. After the break following coach’s indications ‘’Ararat’’ started to play more active, attacking in flanks, were Khazaryan and Ishtoyan controlled the situation. Soon this tactical change gave the desired result.. During one of the attacks Krupey made a foul against Andreasyan and Zanazanyan perfectly took the penalty shoot opening the score. Ten minutes later the combination started by Ishtoyan was completed by swifty Khazaryan who facing the goalkeeper one on one didn’t miss his chance. Finally in the dieing minutes of the match Andreasyan disappointed Vayda making the score 3:0. Like the previous tour in Tbilisi, the outsider in Yerevan was defeated with the same score 3:0. So this was ‘’Ararat’s’’ first win with a huge score in the season of 73.
Thanks to two wins in a row on home ground ‘’Ararat’’ went up 2 places, changing 4th place with the 2nd in the USSR championship, being only one point behind from the leader ‘’Shakhtar’’. By the way Andreasyan with 5 goals became the topscorer of the championship. In the next tour ‘’Ararat’’ had to face ‘’Zenith’’ in Leningrad.
