A Sad Loss
Due to two wins in a row “Ararat” which found its place in the second place of the championship table, had to face Leningrad’s “ Zenith” in the seventh tour of the championship. The latter had started unsuccessfully being last but one. One of the footballers of “Ararat” , the best player of the championship Arkady Andreasyan failed to be present in the match against “Zenith”. Instead with the USSR team he took part in the world championship’s qualifying match against Ireland and had his important part in the victory of the former /1-0/. But “ Ararat” without its best player lost the game. Though the weather was rainy, both teams showed an animated play . Those from Yerevan began the play with their characteristic style: quick moves , and sharp sidebreaks. But by their final attacks “ Ararat” players had already lost their speed and the hosts managed to neutralize the danger. In the 25th second of the match Margarov lost a wonderful chance to open the score. From a close distance his strike was hindered by Pronin at that very moment Pokhosyan took the ball, but the goalkeeper was on alert. Ishtoyan’s shoot was not successful also. In fact these were the only dangerous moments in the first half of the game. After the break, when Goncharov joined Zenith’s team , the hosts gradually gained the advantage . The side-breaks were rather dangerous. Alyosha Abrahamyan managed to save his team from two goals. Our midfielders and defenders acted selflessly building a strong wall behind. ‘’Ararat’’ footballers also took every chance to counter-attack, but unfortunately on that day their final shoots were not effective.It seemed that the game will end in a draw and the teams would have to take penalty shoot out. At the end of the game even Trembach who was the best in realizing penalties joined the host’s team. But in the last minutes of the game Zenith’s attack ended with a goal. So ‘’Ararat’’ lost and our team was left back in two lines. While the first line unexpectedly took “ Kayrat” who beat “Karpats” /1-0/ in Lvov. Kiev’s “Dinamo” and “ Shakhtyor” gained the same score .
‘’Ararat’’ Became Unrecognizable
After the sad loss in Leningrad it seemed that ‘’Ararat’’ would gain its strength and would regain its team spirit in the match with Moscow’s Torpedo in Hrazdan stadium . But ‘’Ararat’’ was unrecognizable. The chain between the players was broken, it seemed as if there wasn’t any will to win. The audience was in despair. It was the worst play of our team in the season of 73. The astonishing indifference of our footballers was mostly obvious in the first 25 minutes of the game when in complete absence of the interplay between back footballers, Smirnov and Nikonov shoot two goals thus bringing our team to the danger of a loss. In addition when Zanazanyan couldn’t realize the penalty, fans became completely disappointed . The attacks were badly organized and monotonous. Our players were trying to break the defence of the hosts mostly by central attacks, but it didn’t help them too. The only players that were displaying an active game were Margarov who joined the team in the first half of the match, and Nazar Petrosyan. The coaches marked the play of the whole team as unsatisfactory except that of the above mentioned two footballers.
In the 65th minute of the match Petrosyan at last managed to score a goal and there appeared a hope to save the game. But everything was finally lost for our team when Nikonov scored the third goal, goalkeeper Abrahamyan couldn’t stop the ball. After two losses in a row “Ararat” took only the 6th place in the championship table. Fortunately this misfortune was followed by ‘’Ararat’s” rise.
