"ARARAT-73". (Part 12,08.09.1973)

Victory in the Champion’s Field

At the 23rd tour of the championship “Zarya”, the champion of the country hosted “Ararat”. This was already the fourth meeting of the competitors in the current season. “Zarya” strived for a return match as “Ararat” had won the 2 games (2-0: 2-1). “Ararat” was ready for action since it felt the breathing of the persecutors: “Dinamo” of Kiev, “Shakhtar” and “Dinamo” of Moscow.
The nervous and strenuous start of the match was conditioned by the importance of the
meeting. The midfielders of “Ararat” played clearly and distinctly, Andreasyan and Margarov cooperated effectively. Half an hour later could open the score of the game, but sport fortune smiled upon “Zarya”. Andreassyan’s long-rage strike shattered the woodwork of the goal, although a minute earlier “Zarya” could reach success.
After half-time “Zarya” strengthened (doubled) the tension on “Ararat’s” goal. Especially Onishchenko and Kuznetsov caused trouble to the guests. The name of Abrahamyan is worth mentioning who saved the team from several goals that seemed inevitable. Pushing back their attacks, “Ararat” organized sharp antiattacks, one of which ended with a goal at the 77th minute. This seemed to be a cold shower for “Zarya”, the activity of which reduced at once. “Ararat” brought the game to a victorious end. During the interview that followed the match, Nikita Simonyan mentioned. “Ararat” has lost 6 points during meetings with Ukraine players. But we learned a lesson from those defeats and we were psychologically ready for the meeting. After half-time we saw the real “Zarya”. Though they strengthened the power of the assault machinery, our players could endure the pressure of the machinery. The champion height is still far, we still have 7 meetings to be held at a high level.
The 24th tour of the championship started with the meeting of Kiev’s and Moscow’s “Dinamo”. The score being 3:0, Kiev’s “Dinamo” passed round “Ararat” in the tournament table. Just on the following day “Ararat” was again the first in the table as it had won Moscow’s “Spartak”. During the game “Ararat” displayed industry and zeal, which yielded the expected result. For a long time football fans hadn’t witnessed such a nice game, on the basis of which one could see continuous movement. On the 5th minute A. Andreassyan opened the score. The back line worked perfectly clear under Abrahamyan’s guidance. It is true, that on the 37th minute “Spartak” managed to restore the balance, but the goal was scored at an unusual situation for which the referee Yuriy Sergienko was to blame. Andreassyan and Papaev began to fight, entered into a argument. Some players ran to help them. Thinking that the referee has stopped the game, “Ararat” ceased to play. At that moment Redin from “Spartak” scored a goal. Happily, six minutes later Ishtoyan saved the situation and scored the 2nd goal. After halftime our football players’ attacking actions gathered full speed. On the 50th minute Zanazanyan’s long-rage strike reached its object. Thus, “Ararat” was again the leader with 30 points having won by a score of 3 to 1.

The tradition was not broken

“Ararat’s” next meeting was held in Moscow, where it was hosted to “Torpedo”. The latter had once won us by a score 3 to 1, so “Ararat” strived for a return match. Our side defenders had to follow the agile game of two forwards Fetissov and Smirnov. The names of Sargsyan, Mesropyan and Martirosyan are worth mentioning who excellently did their duties. After half-time the game was characterized by a quick tempo. “Ararat” was in its element, and two minutes later the only goal of the match was scored by Bondarenko which was an important victory for “Ararat”. So the tradition was not broken and ‘’Ararat’’ were undefeated in Moscow since 1971.
