Unrealized Advantage
During the 26th tour on October 7 “Ararat” hosted Moscow’s “Dinamo” under its own roof. Every loss of a score, every mistake might be fatal. This circumstance created some difficulties and could not but influence our footballers psychologically. The situation was made more complex by the fact that only three days later “Ararat” would contend for the USSR Cup championship with Kiev’s “Dinamo”. “Ararat’ had come to the “Luzhniki” stadium. But it wasn’t his fortune to win a victory.
It is difficult to say what an issue the game would have, if an unexpected incident didn’t take place at the beginning of the game. In the 3rd minute of the match Kurenin from ‘’Dinamo’’ made a long pass from about 30 metres to ‘’Ararat’s’’ penalty area. ‘’Ararat’s’’ goalkeeper Abrahamyan was about to catch the ball when suddenly the ball touched Mesropyan changed the direction and appeared in the net. Inspired with enthusiasm, “Dinamo” applied to pressing defence, not allowing us to speed up and maneouver. It was Andreassyan who twice tried to score the goal, but Pilguy was at his height. However, on the 50th minute the central defender of “Ararat” Kovalenko, joining the attack of the team, realized a good transmission to Andreassyan, who scored the goal from short distance.
Indeed, having a considerable advantage over “Dinamo”, our football could not reach success. During the second round “Ararat” had to try its fortune on the 11m penalty shoot-out and it failed twice. “Dinamo” realized all the 5 kicks, accurately, whereas only Ishtoyan’s, Kovalenko’s and Petrosyan’s kicks attained their objects. Of course, it was a pity that “Ararat” left the playing field defeated despite its hard work and efforts. Luckily, the main rival “Dinamo” Kiev lost the game with ‘’CSKA’’ by a score of 0 to 3 and “Ararat” went on playing a leading role. Nonetheless, it was necessary to forget everything, as 3 days later it would contend for the crystal cup in Moscow. 19 years later the USSR Cup winner once again had to be decided between “Ararat” and “Dinamo” Kiev.
